Unless you have a job that doesn't feel like work, and your boss isn't an a**hole, you may want to work until the very end. But for others, what was once enjoyable has become just plain work and retiring sooner than later is the best medicine.
Of course income is always the main issue. Even if the children are gone and you have access to a pension plan, that may not be enough. Some extra income would certainly help.
You could take a part-time job, but that doesn't give you the freedom to travel and spend more time with your spouse or loved-ones. After all, isn't that what retirement is all about?
